Kelly Clarkson shot to fame in 2002 when millions of pop-music fans voted her the winner on the first season of the popular singing-competition television program, American Idol. Some critics dismissed Clarkson as being less an artist than a creation of the media, but her rock-tinged brand of pop, her country-girl persona and a belting, soulful singing style continues to win the approval of fans, and helped her win two Grammy Awards in 2006.

With her book, she hoped to challenge the ethnic generalizations that she had faced in her work as a journalist for the Boston Globe and the Los Angeles Times and in society as a whole.
