Stephen Tyrone Colbert drew national attention in 1997 as a self-important reporter on the fake news program "The Daily Show" on the American cable network Comedy Central and added to his popularity in 2005 with "The Colbert Report", a half-hour program that parodies right-wing talk shows. The Colbert Report proved to be a critical and commercial success, drawing 1.2 million viewers per night in late 2005 and elevating Colbert's status among the premier political and media satirists.
