A conversation with Dieter Lorenz

Idar-Oberstein in southwestern Germany has been a jewelry making center for hundreds of years. Dieter Lorenz, a native of Idar-Oberstein, is one of the top names in contemporary gem carving, despite having had no formal lapidary training. He is partial to agate, black onyx and drusy quartz in designing.

Gem carver Thomas Harth Ames has been acclaimed for his detailed carvings on gemstones such as rubies, ametrine and rock crystals. Ames gained training in precision cutting techniques as a carver for a company that manufactured gears for the space industry.

A shift in perspective brings out the opal's play-of-color, which pertains to the spectral hues suggested by the stone. This play-of-color is the result of diffraction, a phenomenon wherein all the colors of the rainbow are reflected in white light.
