The frontier beyond Neptune

Article Abstract:

The Kuiper belt, discovered in 1992, is a limited population of small, nearly-circular objects beyond Neptune. The belt has a nearly circular orbit that remains almost unchanged since the outer planets were formed. Some 40 Kuiper-belt objects have been detected to date, using ground-based telescopes. Calculations suggest that there could be a total population of some 70,000 objects. Research suggests that Kuiper-belt objects were ejected by Neptune as it formed, sending some planets into enduring orbits with semimajor axis and high eccentricity.
