Candala chrysoprase from the Marlborough mine in Queensland, Austrialia is a good replacement for the popular jade stone. Although not as tough as jade, c hrysoprase is a chalcedony and has several good properties: it is durable, hard, translucent and takes a good polish. Other features of Candala chrysoprase and the history of the Marlborough mine are given.

A Royal Sahara Jasper slab, faceting machine, and diamond grit discs are among the materials and tools needed. Cutting chrysoprase into oval stones produces as much as 30% waste, and a freeform stone can save much of that wastage and offers the chance to use unique shapes to create an integrated design.
