Von Kracht's gem carvings will mislead onlookers to think that the cameo specialist got her training at an early age in a community were carvers serve long apprenticeships. Von Kracht is unique since she began her craft when she was 27 years old, a single mother and an office worker.

Small wonder

Michael Bauer started carving rough opals in 1978 despite the popular notion at that time that these gems where too delicate for sculpting. When he began collecting opals, Bauer wanted to carve out jewelry that would emphasize the beauty of the gem.
