The listings in catalogs such as the Scott Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue must be understood in order to overcome difficulties in identifying a particular stamp in a collection. The non-listing of a stamp does not mean that it is a rarity either. Tips on using stamp catalog are offered.

Condition, not total catalog value, is important

Stamp collectors should ask questions before investing in stamps to make sure that collections are not over-valued. Gold-plated reproductions, repaired stamps, and reperforated stamps are not good investments. Collectors should make sure stamps are not misrepresented.
