Fighting the dream crops

Article Abstract:

Efforts to stem the tide of drug production have had little success because the money that farmers can earn growing crops such as opium poppies, coca and marijuana represents a higher, more stable income than any agricultural product. Efforts have included crop eradication, crop substitution programs and more vigorous pursuit of smugglers. However, corruption in local governments prevents much of the benefit of these programs from reaching the farmers. Efforts must also be made to eliminate the demand for these drugs in the developed countries.

Working for yourself

Article Abstract:

The UK Inland Revenue has established a number of criteria which must be met by people wishing to be considered as self-employed for tax purposes, as tax regulations for the self-employed are generally regarded as being more favourable than those for employees. Self-employed people may be liable for income tax, National Insurance, value added tax and business rates. The introduction of self-assessment by the Inland Revenue will have a particularly significant impact on self-employed people.

St. Petersburg searches

Article Abstract:

Peter Carl Faberge's influence has remained strong among jewelers in St. Petersburg, Russia, even in the post-Soviet Russia era. Jewelers' creations are still inspired by Faberge, even if they feel the need to find styles of their own.
