The background of the United States 1869 series

Article Abstract:

The Post Office Dept awarded the National Bank Note Co (NBNC) a contract for the 1869 series of stamps. NBNC may have known about the request for bids in advance. Henry G. Mandel of the American Bank Note Co, which acquired NBNC, was probably responsible for putting most of the series into circulation.
