A.T. Stewart: the richest man in the world

Article Abstract:

In the 1960's Stewart by today's standard was as rich as Microsoft's Bill Gates. He parlayed a small inheritance into a NYC retail firm which is now a part of the John Wanamaker firm. He founded Garden City, NY. A hard man, he still got thousands of letters pleading for money. One letter is presented.

The quest for covers addressed to famous people

Article Abstract:

The envelope, with a 1903 one cent Franklin stamp, was addressed to Dr. B.T. Washington, Tuskegee Institute, Al. Washington founded the institute, now a university, in 1881 for children of people new from American bondage. He advised both Pres Theodore Roosevelt and Pres Howard Taft on racial affairs.

Returned cover tells of Pearl Harbor tragedy

Article Abstract:

The formal surrender ending World War II in the Pacific was 50 years ago on Sep 2, 1945, but four years before that a sad story was enacted. A returned letter recently found by a collector had "killed in action, 7 Dec 1941" on it. Apparently the intended receiver died in the Pearl Harbor attack.
