Article Abstract:

Joseph Addison's 'Rosamond' uses a fictitious affair of Henry II to explore the problems in the Duke of Marlborough's marriage as an eccentric form of marriage counseling. This is in accord with his theory of drama as he supported Francis Bacon's belief that theatrical representation can remedy a civil, or potentially a personal, discord. The principle of public harmony has been expanded to the realm of private marital relationship in this work.
