This article examines plans by Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Organisation (CSIRO) to reorganize itself into a number of mini-companies that will handle CSIRO's $700 million dollar budget as if it were an investment portfolio. Relevant points include CSIRO's hiring of a new economist and other commercial-oriented steps designed to make it function in a more business-like manner as it goes about its designated task of advising the Australian government on matters of science.
