Children's housing: the need for communication

Article Abstract:

Children have special needs when it comes to housing. Architects and other home builders must consider developmental and environmental behavior in designing homes with children. Together with home economists, home designs and research must also integrate the aspects of environmental safety and other individual factors which may affect the child when in his home. Communication between the architects or home designers, home economists and children may solve this special housing design consideration.

Eating disorders: prevention through education

Article Abstract:

Eating disorders, particularly among adolescents, are discussed and three prevention models are described. Statistics show that as many as 20% of girls and young women between 12 and 30 years are diagnosed to have clinical eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia. The role of home economists, specifically the home economics teacher, in eating disorderprevention efforts is also tackled.

Affordable housing: within our reach?

Article Abstract:

Although the Congress has enacted the Cranston-Gonzales National Affordable Housing Act of 1990, much has to be done with the reality of rising housing costs. Homelessness has increased to include not only the elderly and mentally ill but also affect young adults and children seen living in shelters and cars. Home economists must take an active stand to address the housing problem.
