A boost for high flyers

Article Abstract:

The high-energy cosmic rays constantly striking the earth's atmosphere from space reach their extreme velocities through collisions with the Milky Way Galaxy's irregular magnetic fields. Through stochastic examination of spectral data D.A. Bryant and colleagues confirmed Fermi's hypothesis that cosmic rays are composed of particles that get their energy from head-on collisions with moving magnetic 'mirrors' in the interstellar medium. Finding out the cosmic rays' exact composition is necessary for a further advance in knowledge.
