Do the right thing - maybe save a life

Article Abstract:

Wal-Mart executive Don Soderquist's address to the 1996 Hardware Industry Convention held in Orlando, FL, called on attendees to prioritize their lives and the the right thing in their dealings with their customers, employees, God and each other. This admonition was particularly relevant because of the need for Doyle Wallace, son of John Wallace, to get a bone-marrow transplant to cure his myelodysplasia. The situation underscores the need for people in the industry to donate marrow that could match Wallace's or be used by other patients in need of bone-marrow transplant.

Retail karma: as home improvement chains disappear, manufacturers have a big stake in sustaining independents and the wholesalers who supply them

Article Abstract:

The financial quandary Wal-Mart finds itself in is reflected by the unhappiness of its CEO, David Glass. Changes in demographics have helped to stunt the retailer's growth and flatten profit margins, and attempts by Wal-Mart to add to its working class customer base by luring those with more discretionary income have been unsuccessful. With the failure of many home improvement chains, it would be in the best interest of manufacturers to support the 33,000 independently-owned stores and the two-step wholesalers who service them.

Time for doughnuts and other things

Article Abstract:

Part of the challenges in running a business is knowing when to take time off. Business operators and managers often find themselves devoting unusually vast amount of time to running their businesses and less attention to personal and other matters. Mangers could address this problem and reduce their stress levels by periodically changing their environment. Attending an occasional local business meeting is a good start.
