Industry round table: distributors face the issues

Article Abstract:

Group of executives from the biggest hardware distribution companies in the US met to talk about issues affecting their businesses. According to these executives, consolidation in the industry is moving at a fast pace and will continue because of competition. They also claimed that independent hardware stores must develop niche products in order to stay successful. Multi-store operations and quality management are contributing factors for success and growth in today's market, according to the executives.

Marcus to Ace: bread buttered on store floor

Article Abstract:

Home Depot Pres and CEO Bernard Marcus spoke at the Ace Hardware convention, in Dallas, TX, during May 1996. Marcus was invited to speak to Ace company officials, who are facing competition from Cotter & Co hardlines supplier. Marcus' speech focused on creating a market, a concept that appealed to Ace executives. Marcus also anticipates that Home Depot will represent over 22% of the home center market by 2000.

Attendees at the 1996 Hardware Industry Convention held in Florida were unanimous in affirming the need the to adapt to the dramatically changing retail environment to remain competitive. Manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers at the conference noted that despite new opportunities, the hardware industry is still undergoing competitive pressures largely shaped by the advent of the big-box chains.
