Is more U.S. lumber bound for Japan?

Article Abstract:

The April, 1996 agreement wherein the Western Wood Products Association persuaded the Japanese government to accept lower graded lumber exports is expected to substantially increase lumber industry exports to Japan but may lower the quality and increase the price of domestic lumber sales. Prior to the agreement only 7 U.S. lumber mills exported to Japan, now 200 are licensed and plan to export. Since Japan pays better prices, U.S. home center store chains and lumber yards are concerned that they will not be able to stock high quality or relatively less expensive lumber.

Customer service plays a significant role in customer loyalty. Rick Skinner, a La Mesa, CA-based remodeler, shifted his business from Home Depot to HomeBase due to poor customer service at Home Depot. Skinner's complaints included difficulty maneuvering around the store due to an out-of-place stack of concrete patch and difficulty locating items because they were not in the proper place.
