Putting the Parkin into Parkinson's
Article Abstract:
Recent research into Parkinson's disease has involved the positional cloning of a previously unknown gene responsible for AR-JP, a rare autosomal recessive form of parkinsonism. This gene has been termed parkin. It has been established that Parkin contains structural motifs that provide an insight into its function. These motifs include one at the amino terminus, where the first 72 amino acids match many different ubiquitin proteins. This research has identified a new element of what will be a complex pathogenetic route leading to Parkinson's disease.
