Lawn & garden: bird goods fly off dealer shelves

Article Abstract:

Hardware Wholesalers dealers can increase their profits with the Wild Bird Center power marketing program including bird feeders, bird houses, and bird-related accessories. Hardware stores such as Hingham, MA-based Walsh and Packard and Hudsonville, MI-based Gemmons Hardware are offering woodpecker feeders, purple martin and wren houses, and blue bird boxes to customers who prefer small birds over chemicals as a means of insect control. Friendswood Ace Hardware is offering red cedar bat houses to customers who use bats to repel mosquitoes.

Allen Grimm: Our Own Hardware

Allen Grimm, plumbing and electrical department manager of Our Own Hardware, notes the growth of upscale or enhanced products, and of outdoor lighting products. He says more than 80% of his chain's electrical products business is from do-it-yourselfers, and that consumer education about new federal energy rules will be key to his department's growth. He also predicts growth in audio, video and computer accessories, and smoke detectors, especially carbon-monoxide detectors.

HWI-Our Own merger approved by members

Article Abstract:

The merger between Our Own Hardware Co and Hardware Wholesalers inc has been approved by a majority of Our Own members. The decision was made at Our Own's shareholders' meeting and the two co-ops will officially become a single buying group effective Jan 1, 1998. Our Own Pres Jim Weyrens notes that the two companies were alike in how they assist their members and in how they treat their members.
