Lowe's following its plan to go head-to-head with competition

Article Abstract:

Lowe's Companies Inc. Pres. and CEO Bob Tillman will alter the competitive strategy of the second largest home center store chain and open some stores in direct competition with Home Depot, the number one chain. Although Lowe's has built its success by building stores in rural areas, away from Home Depot's metropolitan locations, the company will enter into direct competition provided market research discloses that such expansion will improves sales-per-square foot results.

Lowe's pushes west with 14 new stores

Article Abstract:

Lowe's Companies Inc. hopes to match Home Depot's growth in the TX-LA-OK-AR-MO region with a 14-store expansion in 1997. The growth will increase Lowe's presence in the region to 64 stores. Lowe's South Central VP Don Stallings will initiate hiring of 4,000 managers, including the chain's first hiring of outside-the-company executives in its history. Lowe's also announced plans for up to 10 additional Contractor Yard stores in 1997, in Tennessee and Kentucky.

Lowe's to build new DC, expand in-store services

Article Abstract:

A new 875,000-sq-ft regional distribution center will be built by Lowe's Companies In in Schuylkill, PA at a cost of $40 million. The move is part of the company;s overall strategy to find new ways to enhance product quality, customer service and distribution in all its 400 stores. The new 175-acre facility, which will employ 700 people, is expected to be opened by early 1999.
