Native grasses

Article Abstract:

Planting native grasses allows gardeners to make connections between home landscaping and the natural associations of plants in the surrounding region. Native grasses are low-maintainence, hardy, and can provide organization and structure for the regional garden. Prairie grasses work well in midwestern gardens and many varieties of grasses are suitable to be grown in Californian and desert environments.

Makeover in Seattle

Article Abstract:

A Washington state gardener transformed a small and uninspired lot on Puget Sound into a graceful garden, a sanctuary away from the surrounding urban community of Seattle. She installed a path leading up to the house lined with tall perennials, and used plants that would attract butterflies and birds. The backyard consists of natural habitat, with streams, bogs, and water plants.

Bold plants

Article Abstract:

There are many factors gardeners must consider when adding color to their garden, including climate, height and texture of plants, and the length and color of leaves. The design of the garden border is as important as the interior for vibrancy, balance and contrast. If a gardener is in doubt about whether to use a certain plant or not, a good guideline is to try it.
