Odyssey to California's past: natural and human history survive on Santa Cruz Island

Article Abstract:

Santa Cruz Island owner Carey Stanton turned over ownership of the island to the Nature Conservancy in 1987 to avoid its being turned into an industrial and residential area. With this transfer, the island, which is twenty-three miles from the Santa Barbara coast in California, becomes part of the National Park System.

Prairie enterpreneur Ray Hillenbrand follows the lead of native American tradition

Ray Hillenbrand gave up his executive lifestyle for a life in the ranch. He now owns 1,800 heads of buffalo and 25,000 acres of farmlands. Hillenbrand's priority is the restoration of prairie lands and he now uses his businessman's sense to instill order in his property.
