Partners in planting: designer and owners worked together to fashion a remarkable landscape

Article Abstract:

Beasely and Sampson, both physicians, have spent the last 10 years working with Schultz to develop an aesthetically pleasing landscape of blue-flowered shrubs and tawny grasses. Native trees are interspersed with dense plants, all of which are distinguished by their clear sight lines.

Importing plants

Article Abstract:

Gardeners can import plants they find abroad by planning ahead and following regulations. An import permit must be obtained in advance from the US Dept. of Agriculture. Canadian nurseries may be the best source of plants not seen in the US. Other importing tips are included.

Monkshoods and wolfsbanes: elegant, late-blooming aconites give a lift to the border when other flowers fade

Article Abstract:

Aconite flowers provide gardens with a burst of color in late August after most flowering plants and shrubs have begun to fade. They are sensitive to direct sun and wind, and must be staked properly to prevent stem breakage.
