Plain to fancy: An artist adds personal flourishes to an abandoned 1908 house

Dough Hopkins, a New York artist bought a 1908-built, abandoned oil-pumping station near Bloomsburg, which came with a 2,000 square foot pumping station, a ware house, a manifold house, and twin 1,600 square foot houses in the worst of conditions. He rebuilt the house costing $30,000 in three years time by rebuilding the front porch, replacing the hole-pocked roof with new slates and updating the plumbing and wiring.

Old house, new space
Article Abstract:
A family outgrows their home by deciding to add on rather than move on and so, they re-worked the kitchen and added a master suite upstairs to make the house more livable for the family of four and improved the place's awkward floor plans in the process. Reconfiguring the downstairs and adding an upstairs brings a classic American four-square up to date.

High drama: Putting a hilltop house back on firm footing

An engineer, an architect and the homeowners, who bought a 1920s cottage, have reconstructed it from scratch when they realized that the ground underneath it was slipping away. Some of the period details that are taken care of while reconstructing include ship lapped siding, copper flashing and dentiled cornice.
