Pueblo pottery canteens

Article Abstract:

The utilitarian pottery canteens made of clay by American Indians were transformed into an art object and tourist souvenir post 1880. With the growing use of iron pots and pans, pottery production at many Rio Grande Pueblos diminished, so these pots were sent east to museums and private collectors where they became fashionable works of art and the distinctive form of the canteen became popular especially among the tourists who could easily carry it.
