Maria Longworth Nichols, one of America's first female entrepreneurs in china painting formed the 'Rookwood Pottery Company' with a goal to make and market art pottery. 'Rookwood' received a gold medal in 1889 at the World's Fair in Paris and the company is famous for its high quality where no two pieces are exactly alike and the earliest are some of the most desirable pieces.
