Rugged little rhodies

Article Abstract:

The dwarf rhododendron can be a hardy and attractive addition to many cold-climate gardens. Many varieties of the plant offer dense foliage with beautifully colored flowers. The 'Yaku Fairy' variety has large creamy-colored flowers and olive-green leaves, while the Rhododendron fastigiatum offers a rich a purple-flowered ground cover.

Winter greens: the best - and hardiest - broadleaf evergreen shrubs

Article Abstract:

Gardeners in cooler climates can grow broadleaf evergreens if they choose the right varieties. Varieties that do well in cold weather are bearberry, trailing arbutus, mountain avens and twinflower. Evergreens will grow well in bright shade with naturally fertilized soil that is acidic and lean.

Article Abstract:

The daphnes are fragrant semi-green plants and their genus includes a number of tough and versatile garden plants. The daphnes require little care, and can grow best in slightly alkaline to slightly acidic soil and are sensitive to root disturbance.
