Article Abstract:

Delhi's slums encourage ill health and disease despite a variety of well-meaning aid programs and the presence nearby of all the elements of a modern city. A survey of some 20 of the 2000 or more slum communities in Delhi revealed a range of attitudes and approaches to public health. In some, community action had led to dramatic improvements through volunteer effort, training, and cooperation. These were able to adapt development aid to their own circumstances and priorities, despite endemic poverty.
