Silencing the staircase: Tom Silva tightens up the treads and banister

Article Abstract:

A railing or a squeaky tread can be tightened by refastening the failed joints with finish nails or screws and then covering those tracks with putty or wood plugs, but it is important to select the right fasteners, drilling pilot holes or driving the nails at an angle in order to avoid working on the stairs again in the future. The steps involved in tightening the treads and banister are described, which include tightening a loose, tread, fixing a loose baluster and reattaching a handrail to a newel post.
