Senate votes to continue salvage logging

Article Abstract:

Environmentalists fought for repealing the 1995 rescissions law that has resulted in the forest industry downing some standing trees in old-growth national forests, but the Senate voted against repealing it. The law was meant to cover the salvaging of trees that have fallen or burned. However, a rider also sanctions the salvaging of trees susceptible to fires or specific pests, which practically gives them the right to down any tree, according to environmentalists.
