Fritillarias: there's nothing common about these spring-blooming bulbs

Article Abstract:

Fritillarias are also known as snake's-head lilies. There are 100 species of these perennial herbs. Fritillarias are grown throughout the temperate zones of the world, especially in western North America, Asia and the Mediterranean regions. They do not grow well in gardens.

Tall tails: the spires of eremurus rise to astonishing heights

Article Abstract:

The species of lily relatives called eremurus have many common names including foxtail lily, desert candle, and king's spear. The plant in garden settings likes open sunny places in free-draining soil. They will multiply quickly. Several varieties of eremurus are described.

Forcing hardy bulbs

Article Abstract:

Techniques for forcing flowering bulbs to bloom indoors are presented. Bulbs can be forced as early as January if planted in September. Bulbs must experience cold to bloom, so they should be put in cold storage in a celler, a cold frame or even the refrigerator.
