The colorful career of "Dr.Purple": H. Marc Cathey

Article Abstract:

AHS President Emeritus, Dr.H. Marc Cathey is also a distinguished scientist, accomplished author, promoter of horticulture, and a consummate family person who wishes to retire to his native North Carolina. Dr. Cathey continued his mission to provide people with technological tools required to be better gardeners as a President and CEO of the American Horticultural Society from 1974 to 1978 and from 1993 to 1997.

Spotlight on tree bark

Article Abstract:

Each tree species possesses its characteristic bark texture that may be smooth, rough, flaking or furrowed while their colors vary from white to black, shades of brown, green, copper, rose and tan such that the beauty of the bark alone is enough reason to make it a part of the garden. Some of the trees with attractive barks are discussed such as Araucaria araucana, Arbutus unedo, Carya ovata and Pinus resinosa.

Cutting gardens: a fresh look

Article Abstract:

A traditional way to supply flowers for indoor decoration is to grow a separate cutting garden. The best flower choices are examined, as are techniques for selecting which flowers to cut. Alternative ideas for supplying flowers for arrangements are also examined.
