The new environmentalism

Article Abstract:

A change in consumer interest in environmentalism from the social aspects to the personal aspects will have a major influence on their purchases of home repair and building materials. A 1996 Home Improvement Research Institute survey found consumers are no longer concerned with use of scarce resources, excess packaging or forest protection but want energy and water savings, smog control and indoor air quality. Ace Hardware Corp. and Home Depot Inc. have become leaders in consumer education on the environment and in other environmental efforts.

Hechinger opens 3-level unit in Washington, D.C

Article Abstract:

Hechinger Co has opened a three-level store in Washington, D.C., which will help satisfy that underserved market. The new store, Home Project Center, is closer to the hybrid store that the firm will eventually build, which will be a combination Hechinger/Home Quarters. The new store has also helped firm officials realize that they can open units in dense urban areas because Hechinger remodeled a former Sears building instead of building a new facility.
