The standards issue: engineered-wood makers take sides

Article Abstract:

Lumber producers and retailers are in disagreement over whether to adopt I-joist standards proposed by the APA-Engineered Wood Association. The standards cover 19 types of I-joists which have experienced rapidly growing popularity in construction use. Those for the standards say uniformity would make design easier and lower costs, eliminating a major sales obstacle since I-joists currently cost slightly more than conventional lumber. Those against the standards say they could harm product quality and may be an attempt by some in the industry to make I-joists a commodity item and gain an advantage over established I-joist producers.

Weather, red tape delay project

Article Abstract:

Bureaucratic red tape and snowy weather conspired to extend the home-building project undertaken by Ron Warwick from six months to nine months. Warwick, of Rhode Island, started the project in Oct 1995 and had set a completion date of Dec. Paper work by local government agencies as well as snow led to a loss of time and subsequent layoff. With a new deadline set for July 1996, Warwick and his team were able to finish the project by mid-July.
