Hardware store owners need to determine their position in the marketplace and be able to react accordingly. If the store is the market leader, the strategy is to constantly improve to stay one step ahead of competitors. Retailers that are the second or third in the market should analyze how to make the market leader's strengths a liability. Stores that are ranked lower than third should consider using either a "flanker" strategy or a niche strategy.

Successful 2nd stores

Independent hardware retailers who have successfully survived despite competition from big box home center stores are business smart entrepreneurs. HWI-affiliate Kibler Lumber expanded in southwester Ohio, to try and stay ahead of big box competitors. He added stores to cut down on the mileage between his customers and his stores. Mike Windiate, owner of 3 Pro Hardware stores, expanding with an eye toward customer convenience and service.

Eagle announces California entry

Eagle Hardware & Garden is slated to open its first California store on Quinta in February 1998. The home center chain, based in Renton, WA, plans to open six more stores in the state. Eagle Pres and CEO Richard Takata says that the move into California is part f the chain's overall expansion program.
