When a woodpecker is not an owl

Article Abstract:

The controversy between defenders of the 1973 Endangered Species Act's (ESA) provisions for protection of the red-cockaded woodpecker, southern lumber industries and the Forest Service has grown to major proportions although some successful settlements have been reached. Unlike the spotted owl which was the highly publicized object of a similar controversy, the spotted owl has a habitat on both public and private lands and its protection and legal and regulatory decisions relative to the ESA have had a dramatic effect on southern lumber industry operations.

Lumber quality: a matter of balance

Article Abstract:

Wood products today generally are not as high quality as years past. There is less old growth timber and microwave drying methods which have replaced kiln drying are quicker but less effective. Engineered wood includes the use of wood materials beyond the hard wood. However, these changes have helped preserve resources and deliver products at an economical price.
