Alco and Wal-Mart to go head to head

Article Abstract:

Duckwall-Alco bought the Magic Mart chain in May, and now their stores are in direct competition with the successful Wal-Mart discounters. Wal-Mart stores are larger, and therefore able to stock more and different items, but Alco expects to do well anyway. Managers cite strong marketing and good presentation in domestics and housewares as one strategy to turn the Magic Mart stores into profitable operations.

K mart goes public on resale pricing: write-in cards on display in stores

Article Abstract:

K mart is asking its customers to fill out cards to protest price maintenance. Other general merchandise retailers support K mart's actions, claiming that Attorney General William Baxter is not enforcing the retail pricing laws which allow for price competition. Retailers say that such laws are in the consumers' best interests and should be upheld.
