Christmas afternoons in Williamsburg, VA, are for visiting the annual toy and dollhouse exhibition at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Center. Part of a charming Williamsburg tradition, the exhibit features pull toys, sleds, stuffed toys and the Long Island and Morris-Canby-Rumford dollhouses.

Over the hill to the poorhouse

American poorhouses or almshouses were first established in the late 16th and early 17th centuries as paupers from England settled in the country. The poorhouse system was known for crowding, inadequate food and sanitation, separation of families and lack of privacy.

An old New England house

Article Abstract:

The Bubier mansion in Marblehead, MA has been in existence since the mid-18th century and has seen many renovations and transfers of ownership since then. Its present owners have made very few changes with the goal of restoring and preserving its historical flavor.
