Following the drinking gourd

Background on the so-called Underground Railroad that existed in the northern states to help escaping black slaves is discussed. The railroad was not a physical entity but referred to the group of anti-slavery advocates who detested the government's regard of slaves as property of their owners.

The lives of a 1719 Saltbox

Article Abstract:

A traditional timber-made house was acknowledged to have been built during the 18th century in Northern Connecticut. Different owners who have consecutively lived in the house have remodelled it according to their preference. It has been reestablished and considered as a historical landmark.

How the Holcomb house was built

Article Abstract:

The particular condition of the Holcomb's timber-house which was built originally in 1719, has been the basis for renovation, for the past few centuries. The processes of repair and maintenance, as well as the materials used were influenced by the original style of the house.
