Article Abstract:

Transplantation of musculoskeletal tissue is ten times as common as organ transplantation in the US. Bones, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage can be surgically implanted in their entirely as orthotopic replacements, or as raw material in the reconstruction of bone and tissue defects. Bone and tissue is obtained from live donors, as during joint replacement surgery, and from cadavers. Sterilized bone can provide a structural framework for bony ingrowth in spinal fusion, limb salvage, and other procedures.
