Levitz: more closings

Article Abstract:

Levitz, a furniture retail chain, intends to shut down 15 more stores in 1998, leaving six markets in its second round of multi-market closings since filing for bankruptcy protection. The stores to be closed are the two stores in Denver, CO, one in Colorado Springs, CO, three in the area of Tampa, FL, two in St. Louis, MO, and three in San Diego, CA. The company is also shutting down its store in Alhambra, CA, and its warehouse-showroom in Plano, TX. The stores are a combination of leased and owned properties. Six are full warehouse-showroom locations and the others are satellite showrooms.

Havertys to close clearance centers

Article Abstract:

Havertys closed a Dallas, TX, clearance center in July 1998 and faces the possibility of doing the same with seven more sites within two years, including one on Atlanta, GA, by the end of 1998. Company President Jay Slater attributes the closures to the elimination of the need for the business by new technology and enhanced operations. The clearance center business that is yet to prove lucrative, is also being closed in line with improved business practices that is prompted by the firm's alliance with Furniture Brands International.
