Knowledge, Networks and Neighborhoods - Will Microcomputers Make Us Better Citizens?

Article Abstract:

Many United States citizens can now afford to have computers which give them access to huge amounts of information. The effect of growing technology on democratic principles is considered. The nature of the new technology and forces affecting its development are examined. Computer technology is viewed as a means seeking an end. Effective democrative action is highly correlated to an informed citizenry. Citizenship is addressed as a political notion. The Aristotelian and Platonic conceptions of citizenship are compared in the light of information technology. The language of belief communication and generation may be either related to science or popular belief. The main issue may well be how to have maximum participation and still get something done. Vague policy may be the essential ingredient in the formation of workable programs. Response and discussion follow the article.
