Faced with the triple whammy of Chinese and Eastern European exports, soft economic conditions and the euro-U.S. dollar imbalance, Italian leather upholstery producers are looking hard for ways to improve competitiveness. They are updating themselves on the manufacturing, marketing, design and service front to make sure that they protect their distinct identity in the marketplace.

Seeking to better promote their identity, product quality and designs, leather producers in the Basilicata and Puglia regions of southern Italy have received official certification from the national government recognizing the locale of Matera as an "upholstered furniture district." Major upholstery makers in the region include the Big Three - Natuzzi, Nicoletti and Calia.
