Sears names Clifford COO

Article Abstract:

Sears has appointed James R. Clifford as its new president and COO for its 840 full-line stores effective Nov. 2, 1998. Clifford will take responsibility for all functions including finance, human resources, strategy, store planning, construction, licensed business, store operations and merchandise planning. Clifford is credited by Sears Chairman and CEO Arthur Martinez for the successfully turnaround of Sears Canada where he had been president and COO. He will be one of three top executives including president for merchandising Robert Mettler and president for Sears' seven domestic regions and Puerto Rico, Allan B. Stewart, serving on Sears' executive committee.

Federated disbands buying team

Article Abstract:

Federated Department Stores has eliminated the centralized furniture buying and merchandising operations with associated responsibilities designated to other divisions. Federated Merchandising Group chairman Jean Grove noted that the operations have achieved the production of standards and core vendors for different divisions in fulfillment of requirements, thus the cancellation of the operation. The company has also appointed Bob Handler as the new vice president for tabletop after earlier working as vice president for furniture at the Federated Merchandising Group.

Macy's East taps Markman
