A new approach to management training

Article Abstract:

The Management Academy was an important product of an executive training and development program initiated by the Orange County, California Board of Supervisors in an attempt to compete with private employers in the county for a shrinking pool of qualified job candidates. The Management Academy provides supervisors with a chance to meet once a month for a year to learn leadership and management skills, practice those skills, and share information in problem-solving activities. Off-site classes, taught by experienced Orange County managers, give student-managers problem-solving and teamwork projects that reflect county problems. The managers spend eight hours a day, once a month, for a total of 100 hours in the program. The Academy tries to teach managers how to meet their responsibilities more effectively.

New York Telephone connects training to development

Article Abstract:

New York Telephone has been able to achieve success in a competitive environment by connecting management development needs with overall organizational training goals in its program called 'The Development Partnership'. The program was developed so that managers could: decrease the time it took to handle responsibilities; increase non-supervisory job performance; and take on enhanced responsibilities. The program also identified a four-step process which helps develop individuals with steps such as: analyzing the annual development cycle; managing on-the-job development; and providing for managerial accountability. Another important aspect of the program was the creation of a general curriculum which is used to help managers determine development activity.
