A strategic future for personnel?

Article Abstract:

Changes in organizational culture can put demands on personnel professionals, and one way to cope is for personnel professionals to begin emphasizing strategy and leadership using a model of organizational effectiveness. The model forecasts behavior and performance results and centers on cause and effect. Also, the model stresses the variables of leadership, strategy, and culture and places less stress on the variables of management practices and systems. A workshop has also been proposed which is based around principles of the model. Its goals include: examining the need to change and review elements of the current personnel role in firms; examining the differences between current roles and new skill requirements; and reviewing systematic feedback.

'Expert systems' and the personnel department

Article Abstract:

Expert systems using human expertise and the techniques of artificial intelligence can reduce problem areas and increase the effectiveness of personnel management. A problem should be selected for application for which the recognizable benefits are greater than the production costs. Repetitive tasks can be handled by the expert system, thus freeing personnel staff for other duties. An expert system can function as a storage library for the skills of resigned and retired experts as well as an ideal training tool. Examples of applications in personnel management include guidelines for initial selection of job candidates, development of an employee's pension plan, and the distribution of profit-share bonuses to senior managers.
