The changing world of personnel

Article Abstract:

A survey of 70 UK human resource managers indicates most believe the personnel departments' importance has grown due to its increased involvement in meeting business strategy and statutory goals, and in improving worker performance. The main issues most often handled are employee discipline and dismissal situations, pay issues, training, administration, and staffing needs. Some personnel functions, such as interviewing or layoffs, have devolved or been delegated to line managers in many organizations. Many companies have methods of evaluating personnel department's effectiveness.

Changes in personnel

Article Abstract:

UK personnel departments and human resource managers are increasingly called upon to demonstrate their value to their companies, especially in the increased competitive atmosphere of the 1990s. However, despite the gradual shifting of personnel duties to line managers, the influence of many personnel departments has grown. Personnel directors and specialists, promoting sound policies, can improve employees' performance and lower turnover and absenteeism. However, critics and supporters continue to debate the real impact and value of human resources management.

Tomorrow's company

Article Abstract:

The Royal Society of Arts's report titled 'Tomorrow's Company: the role of business in a changing world' states that UK businesses are not making the changes necessary to compete in the international market. The reasons for this are that UK companies do not emphasize relationship building with employees, they rate success in terms of short-term financial goals and they are complacent. To be successful in the future market, companies should strengthen employee relations and form ties with the community.
