Eight tips to avoid crashing your pension and benefits operations in mergers

Article Abstract:

The potential financial dangers that acquiring companies may face when merging with other firms, particularly the added challenge of merging their pension and benefits programs, are cited. An eight-point guide for preventing such potential losses is presented. The guide can serve as a framework for assessing the advantages and disadvantages of mergers, specifically involving the costs and operations of pensions and benefits programs.

404(c) regulations create conundrum for plan sponsors

Plan sponsors are puzzled over the requirements regarding participant communication under the new Section 404(c) regulations. The requirements are particularly confusing for sponsors seeking to manage their fiduciary responsibilities in participant-directed plans since they impose open-ended liabilities which can only be avoided by meeting an unclear standard. An examination of this conundrum is conducted.
