A welcome change to immigration law

Article Abstract:

The Immigration Act of 1990 becomes effective on Oct 1, 1991. A noteworthy aspect of the law is the total revamp of the system of business immigration that takes into consideration the need to ease America's labor shortages with international talent. The law triples employment-related visas to 140,000 per year and introduces five new business categories: priority workers, persons with exceptional ability, professionals and other skilled workers, special immigrants, and investors. The new system is expected to reduce the backlog for employer-sponsored green cards. The law also provides significant changes in the issuance of nonimmigrant visas and adopts new procedures for the H-1 temporary professional visa category. These procedures include an important clause that specifies the need for a labor condition application approved by the Department of Labor.

Manage the change reaction

Article Abstract:

Managing organizational change must be carefully planned and executed. It must be clearly understood why change is needed. Lower profits, new technology and competition are some of the possible reasons. Since major change should not occur often in companies, the change needs to be backed by management. The program implementing the change should be well planned and a specific program of implementation should be defined. Employee communications should be frequent and accurate so misinformation does not circulate. After presenting the change and methodology to employees, they should be encouraged to ask questions. Regular meetings to keep them up to date on the change should be held. Immediate supervisors should clearly define employees' roles and recognize their performance in an effort to build employees' self-esteem.

Manage words effectively

Article Abstract:

Effective communication within organizations is positive and direct, but often personnel professionals may unintentionally provide inadequate communication to employees which can cause organizational problems. Recommendations for improving communication efforts include: learning to reveal accurate information; learning how to manage appropriate nonverbal cues, such as eye contact and relaxed posture; and learning to listen effectively. It is also important that personnel professionals respond to employee concerns in a timely manner.
