An action plan for helping troubled employees

Article Abstract:

It is a common belief among supervisors that employees should leave personal problems at home. Most people in reality cannot completely separate their professional and personal lives. Personal problems such as financial pressures, the death of a loved one, or marital difficulties can result in lowered performance and high absenteeism. The supervisor should be aware of the possible negative ramifications of approaching the employee and offering to help. In drawing up an action plan to offer personal assistance, the supervisor should use the following guidelines: identify specific changes in the employee's work patterns, encourage the employee to discuss problems, be understanding, convey trust and concern for the employee, emphasize the employee's responsibility for solving the problem, develop specific steps to reduce the effect of the problem on the work environment, and follow up on employee progress.

Strategic planning: process and plan go hand in hand

Article Abstract:

Line managers should play an essential role in strategic planning. The process of developing and implementing a strategic plan is a cycle of eight interrelated components. The first four components are concerned with developing the strategy; analyzing the business environment, assessing the company's own capabilities, and defining the company's goals and its strategies. The four components for implementing the plan include the proper action plan for executing the strategy, the structure of the organization, company resources, and support systems.
